Photovltaic Systems:

Solar power is free energy from the sun. Free and 100 % Environmental friendly

With more than 300 days of sunshine, North Cyprus is in the position to get the full benefits  from solar power.

Photovoltaic (PV) modules generate sunlight direct into DC electricity.

We differentiate “on grid” , “off- grid” and “hybrid” systems.

 

In “On Grid” systems a so called inverter converts the high voltage  DC power from the sun to 230 V AC power for immediate use and reduces your actual electric bill.

 

In “Off Grid” systems no mains electricity is available. Instead the DC power is  stored in battery banks for future use, fe at night, or the power is used immediately. Solar lighting and solar pumping systems are also “off-grid” systems as no mains is required. Please note, that PV module connection and inverter for off and on grid systems are of different design and not compatible.

 

“Hybrid” systems are usually “off-grid” systems with several battery charging options as solar, wind energy and / or a generator and / or mains.

 

In Back-up systems, sometimes called UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply), “silent power”, or “no more power cuts” systems,  you charge your battery bank with the mains electricity or a generator. Connected to the grid, power cuts are, depends on the size of your batteries, are thing of the past. If not connected, this system reduces the running time of your generator and therefore is, technically, an “off-grid” installation. For more info see: Back Up Systems.

In Cyprus we often install a “hybrid” system with PV and Mains / Generator as a power variable supply.

 

Off Grid Systems (Stand alone System - Island Systems): This system works independent from the grid. The PV modules supply the power, a special solar charger controlles the charging of the battery bank, which is usally 12 to 48 VDC. The inverter converts the stored energy in the batteries from said 12/24/48 VDC into 230 VAC. In some systems (usually 12 VDC systems) the DC power also could be used, fe for lighting. On Grid (Grid Feed Systems): The Photovoltaic modules are connected through an on grid inverter (96-97% efficiency!) directly into the electrical circuit. This reduces your needs from the main grid, resulting in money savings. Depending on the size of the installed solar power, the savings can go up to 100%. The amount of savings depend on your energy usage behaviour and whether your KIB-TEK meter is able to turn backwards. Daytime energy production can be used directly, possible “overproduction” will feed the mains and make your meter turn backwards. The perfect system for home owners who are often at home and OFFICES, WORKSHOPS who run air conditions from “9 to 5”. See our Video Section for related videos.

Hybrid System: Means that several energy sources are working together in one single system. This could be a wind turbine and a generator, solar and mains electricity or all of it. Even mains electricity and generator systems are “hybrids”, but this term usually is not used for this option.

Solar Direct Systems: This system works independent from the grid. The produced energy is directly used by a consumer. In most cases a DC pump uses this energy. According to the light intensity the working effectivity either increases or decreases.

 

Off Grid - stand alone / Island system inverters we use are resistant against power surges and power drops. They achieve a stable Sinwave (not cheap modified sinewave!!) output of 230 Volt AC power to prevent all your equipment from damage. We are able to connect up to 30kW of solar power in a single household which would be enough to run a little factory. Normal household usage of electricity is about 3 to 5 kW. PV modules can be mounted on the roof facing south if there is enough space. We advise our customers for an active solar tracker which rises the energy output by 30%. An active solar tracker follows the Sun and makes sure that the Sun and solar panels are always in a 90 degree (70 to 100) position.

Wind Generator Systems: Wind Energy is a form of Solar Energy! Free and 100 % Environmental friendly

Wind power is a naturally abundant source of energy and is the most economically viable form of renewable energy at this moment, as long you live in a windy place. Continuous improvements of turbine technology are bringing down generating costs. We provide high performance stand alone and grid connected wind turbines in the range from 100 Watt up to 6 MW (ENERCON).

To power a house just through wind is not 100% possible as we have long periods without wind. The best to use wing turbines is in a hybrid system where Photovoltaic and a wind generator are installed side by side. Contact us to learn about the best suitable system for your needs.

 

 

How does a wind turbine work?

The most important parts of a wind turbine are the rotor blades. Due to their aerodynamic properties, the energy of the wind that passes makes them rotate. The blades are connected to a low speed shaft that is connected to a gearbox, where the movement from the rotor is accelerated. The high speed shaft of the gearbox in turn is connected to a generator that generates the electricity. Through a connection to the grid, the electricity generated can be transported to the places where it is needed.

Size of the turbine:

Energy output increases with increases of the rotor diameter. Tower height is also important, since wind speed increases with distance from the ground. Besides indicating the size of turbine by the size of the blades or the hub height, the size is also indicated by the generator capacity of the turbine. Turbine technology is constantly changing. In 1988 generator capacity of an average wind turbine was around 100 kW, nowadays turbines of 6 MW are beeing produced.

Where does wind energy come from?

Most renewable energy ultimately comes from the sun. Of the solar radiation energy reaching the earth only about 0.25% is converted into wind kinetic energy. Today this is still about 25 times the global annual energy production.

How is solar energy converted into wind energy?

Temperature differences around the globe caused by the sun make the air move, better known as wind. The sun heats the regions around the equator more than the rest of the world. Because hot air is lighter than cold air, this air will rise and will spread from the equator to the north and south. This system is called the trade Wind system and is one of the most important of the global wind systems. Due to the rotation of the earth, this movement is not North-South or South-North but from the North East and South East. The trade wind system generally gives the more stronger and constant winds. Towards the Polar Regions there are other wind systems, known as the Westerlies.

Dark blue areas have got the highest wind speeds. These global wind systems are useful to understand global wind resources. But local conditions such as mountain passes, presence of seas or oceans, obstacles as houses or trees, etc play a much more important role in determining the average wind speed at a certain location. The best location to generate electricity by using wind energy is the one with the highest wind speeds. Measuring wind speeds and knowledge of wind systems is thus very important for developing a successful wind energy instalation.

Back Up Systems: The logical alternative to Fuel powered Generators

As you are living in North Cyprus you may have faced some serious problems, power surges destroying your electrical equipment and power cuts, leaving you in the dark. Ongoing construction work in many areas of the island and also the continuous development of big hotels, have a huge Power demand e.g.. for their salt water desalination (or Reverse osmosis) plants, pool pumps, electrical goods etc, and the advancement of such energy consumers, will make the energy demand of Northern Cyprus much bigger than it is now.

Running a fuel powered generator is a noisy, dirty and expensive thing to do and should be only done in times of desperate energy needs. Night walks to switch over the fuses, rising fuel costs and the permanent maintenance are just a few disadvantages.

                    

Back-Up Systems are modern types of generators. A Back-Up System is the smaller version of a Photovoltaic Solar or a Hybrid System. Unlike those systems, a Back-Up System uses the power of the grid (mains) and stores this electricity in batteries. In times of a power failure (or instability of voltage) a generator, called inverter, kicks in automatically and "converts" the power stored in the batteries to 230VAC. You will not realise that there is a powercut. Noiseless and maintenance friendly, all Back-Up Systems are eco - friendly compared to a fuel run generator which is very noisy, dirty and produces highly toxic gas which will harm you and your environment.

Shortly the positive effects of a Back Up System:

Solar Direct Systems - DC Water Pumping:

Technically spoken, solar pool or well pump systems are also “off-grid” systems, but no accumulators or chargers are involved. The DC power is connected to a pump controller which converts the 2- phase DC power to 3-phase DC power and directly is used to run the pump. The sum of solar radiation per day, the solar power installed, the static lift and the pump model will affect the amount of water to be pumped. Usually in summer we want more water for fe irrigation than in winter, or more water to be circulated in our pool. A Swimingpool pump is one of the biggest consumer of electricity and always you must pay the highest tariff. If you dont want to empty the water of your pool after every season you need to circulate this water in winter. Solar Pool pumps achieve a payback of  4-6 years at todays electricity rates.

Solar Street & Garden Lights:

During the day a solar generator produces electric power, which is simultaneously accumulated in special storage batteries. As soon as it gets dark, the energy, required for the lighting, is re-taken from the accumulator. Airventilation Systems: Heating and Cooling, Clean and Fresh Air in all your Rooms

Why not heat air with the power of the sun? Why not try to keep the heat inside (or in summer outside) the house? 

"Heat recovery air-ventilation sytems" are pumping fresh air into all rooms of the house (intake green/red) and lead the dirty air out (exhaust yellow/pink). In addition, an air heat-exchanger makes sure that the temperature of the house remains stable. In summer and Winter.

 

An additional earth heat exchanger, 2.50m in depth,  could pre-heat or pre-cool the air before entering the house.	Additionally, a Solar air-collector produces hot air as well. The performance of the systems are brilliant and 100% reliable.

Water Purification: 100% Chemical Free!

Necon systems are not only chlorine free, they are chemical free!! In chlorinated pools you do not only add chlorine to your pool. You buy your tablets, your powder and several other chemicals are added. Read the list of ingredients!!! They are added to your pool “during treatment” to avoid algae and other germs growing.  Their names are aluminium sulphate, potassium perchlorate, natriumaluminate and others.

In “chlorine with salt” systems you have to add these chemicals yourself from time to time.

In “chlorine free” water  purification as ozone pools you have to add  those chemicals as well. In other systems they are, fe “hidden in the bottle” and we do advice you to ask for the full “list of ingredients”! Chlorine is and the additives are often very toxic.

Solar Water Heating: Design & installation of solar thermal systems for central heating, pool heating and domestic hot water systems

Many companies are producing solar heaters, nearly all of them are not to the latest standards, most of them are not worth the money.

Different reasons are responsible for this verdict and the non education of some people who face the solar systems unefficiently  to the wrong direction, will not make this subject easier. Some systems are ok, but are made of poor materials which will limit lifetime and therefore performance.  

A Small introduction to solar Water Heating - Solar Thermals

The idea is to heat water with sunshine. But what is "sunshine"? Sunshine is the total radiation from the sun, including all invisible infrared rays. Sunshine is the "brightness of the day" even in cloudy conditions. The best would be, obviously, to collect ALL the sunshine and turn ALL that energy into hot water, but that is (physically) not easy. So, we try our best and try to get as much out of it - within "economical borders".   We have to take into consideration that we would like to have our shower in the morning or in the evening. Usually not the time the sun is shining.

If we do not invest  enough for a solar water heater our performance is poor, the money spent "for nothing".

We have mainly two components: The solar collector, including the solar absorber which collects the sunlight and the hot water storage tank.

These two components can be of different quality and can be assembled in many ways. Due to the fact that so many houses in Cyprus are equipped with poor solar collectors incl a poor water storage tank, we start to explain you how to do it NOT. When you buy a house, usually a "solar water heater is included" . With these systems you will not have much fun, because these systems are so called:

Open Loop Systems´s, monted on 99% of all houses in Northern Cyprus:

The mains water flows direct into the (iron made, half inch water pipe) solar collector, heats up and then, by gravity,  flows into the (iron or steel) hot water storage tank. Even if the absorber is made from copper it makes no difference. Painted with "black paint", they emmit most (85%) of the sunlight immediately to the case, glass and the environment. The solar absorber builds up limescale (see below) very soon and during night those systems have the tendency to "turn reverse by gravity" (because they are "open").

All components are poorly insulated. The result is dirty water (from absorber and tank) and latest in the morning cold water (if ever heated). Classical "payback" would be after approx eight years, but "efficient" working lifetime is, due to the increasing limescale problem, approx 3 to 5 years only. You loose money!  Limescale after 2-5 years

 

Closed Loop System: (we only sell closed loop systems)

The mains water is separated through a heat exchanger from the "solar circle".  Different systems are available. In the solar circle a "solar fluid", usually a water-glycerin mixture, is either pumped or floating itself through a heat exchanger and transfers the heat to the water to be used. In so called "heat pipes" (vakuum pipes) ethanol or other liquids are floating. Technical more sophisticated, also in those systems cheap mats could be used and reduce lifetime. Be aware of "fakes". See below on our "Profit light" system what good mats will do...

Payback Calculation for Cyprus: 2100 kw/h per m² times 1.85m² of the solar collector times 52% equals 2000kW/h  of energy and worth 420 euro a year. (kWh = 20 cents)

Zero Energy House: Comfortable, energy & money saving, environmental friendly living!

In 2002, the building boom started in North Cyprus . Even before this happened, the country could not and still cannot cope with the problems of rising energy- and water demands for e.g. air conditions and swimming pools. The demand will rise quicker than new power stations, a better infrastructure,  new land lines and bigger relays stations can be built and/or installed. The situation will go worse, even if the officials may say the opposite.

The power cuts will remain and prices for energy will go up.

At the moment, we are 6.5 billion human beings on our planet earth. In 2025 we will be 10 billion. It is predicted that in the coastal areas of the mediterannean the population will go up by 50%. It is also predicted that the summers will be much hotter as they are today. "Cooling energy" will be a big demand.

 

This "threat" was the reason why  AGD Solar seriously thought about saving energy in buildings in Cyprus.

 

The aim was to combine the customers demand for comfort (a healthy and "luxurious ambiance") and quite stable energy- and maintenance costs.

 

It needs to be considered that a proper built house has a lifetime of 50-100 years and that in only 20 years the cost of "maintenance and wear & tear", can easily be as high as the purchase cost of the property itself and that a big part is taken up by energy costs. Considering this, AGD Solar developed a "new building strategy designed for Cyprus" the "Zero Energy House".

 

Zero energy does not mean having no energy at all. No, it means that you save energy and you GAIN comfort. You are self sufficient and you use renewable energies for your much lower energy demands. Long use of heating systems, air conditioners, generators, which use expensive fossil energy (which on top pollute the environment and are noisy) ---- are a thing of the past.

 

"Comfort" is what you should expect and find in your home which you pay a lot of money for.

 

We minimize your energy consumption and maximize your living comfort.

How do you define "living comfort"? Some ideas:

* Inside the house you expect it to be cooler in Summer and warmer in Winter (than outside) in ALL rooms, not only in the bedroom or the living room for a couple of hours.

* You want clean and fresh air, free of fungi, mould and toxic emissions.

* Once you paid for your installations, maintenance prices would not bother you in the future.

* Viability of uninterrupted (and clean) power. No power cuts, no noise, no smell and no permanent maintenance of "half-working" or "blown off" equipment.

- Hot water always available for shower, heating and and and..

All these specifications are only (limited) achieved in conventional houses when you have a  complicated technical infrastructure as air conditioners, combined heating systems and others. Although you have paid it, you still continue to pay for your energy.   

A small callculation:

For a 150 sqm house, which are offered everywhere in North Cyprus, you face energy costs for cooling of approx STG 2500 and heating of around STG 1600. As long you do not want to live in a freezing or hot house which is only „partly“ heated or cooled, you face costs of at least 4100 STG every year. As energy prices rise by approx 8% every year, you would need to spend 60.000 STG for energy costs in a period of 10 years. If you calculate it over a period of 20 years, it will add up to 190.000 STG. Our „Zero energy house“ reduces energy costs up to 90% and increases „living comfort“.

Conventional Houses- pop up like mushrooms, worthless in the future.

 

Building a Zero Energy House is more expensive than a house, which is just designed to be sold to you, and features nothing but maybe a nice view and a little marble on the floors (extra payments, of course).

 

The effort to integrate the  “Zero energy house” principle which uses ABUNDANT, PV or wind  energy and other techniques In Harmony With Nature, only costs the same or less than your heating bill for the next 5-8 years..
